A heavily camouflaged WagonR test mule has been spotted testing on public roads, and the pattern is now familiar. Maruti Suzuki has already moved the Swift, Dzire, and Baleno onto its newer 1.2-litre three-cylinder Z12E engine — and the WagonR looks next in line.
The Engine Swap That's Becoming Routine
The current WagonR runs a 1.0-litre K10C (66hp, 89Nm) and a 1.2-litre four-cylinder K12N (89hp, 113Nm). If Maruti follows its now-established pattern, the four-cylinder K12N gets replaced by the Z12E — a high-compression three-cylinder unit already producing 83hp and 112Nm in the Baleno. As with every previous Z12E swap, expect a modest power dip in exchange for genuinely better fuel efficiency.
A CNG Improvement That's Still Unconfirmed
Multiple outlets are speculating an underbody CNG tank, similar to what Maruti introduced on the Brezza CNG — freeing up boot space that's long been a common complaint on the current WagonR CNG. Worth being clear: the spy shots themselves don't actually confirm this. It's a genuine possibility based on Maruti's broader CNG packaging direction, not a confirmed feature.
What's Visible, What Isn't
Exterior changes look minimal — the test mule keeps WagonR's familiar tallboy stance, headlamps, and taillamp positioning. Turn indicators appear repositioned to the front fenders. Cabin visibility is limited, so interior updates remain unconfirmed.
Why It Matters
The WagonR sold 1.24 lakh units in just the first seven months of 2026 — genuinely serious volume for Maruti. A facelift landing on one of India's best-selling hatchbacks, even a mechanically modest one, is worth watching closely. No launch date or pricing confirmed yet.
