India's sedan segment sold 35,119 units in September 2026, up 5.32 per cent from 33,346 a year earlier. The growth owes a lot to one car: the Tata Aeris, which sold 2,406 units in its launch month. Without it, the other nine models in the list fell 1.9 per cent to 32,713 units, according to AutoPunditz.
The numbers are wholesale dispatches, not retail registrations.
September 2026 Sedan Sales

Rushlane and AutoPunditz report matching figures. The year-ago values for the Verna, Tigor and City are derived from the stated percentage changes, so they are approximate.
One Model Still Dominates
The Dzire, Aura and Amaze together sold 28,570 units, about 81.4 per cent of the segment. The Dzire alone holds just over half. It fell 11.4 per cent year on year and 3.61 per cent from August, yet it sold 59,963 units across the July to September quarter, up 4.39 per cent, according to Rushlane's quarterly table.
Winners and Losers
- Hyundai Aura: up nearly 40 per cent, the strongest growth among the big sellers, and up 12.64 per cent on August.
- Honda Amaze: up 25.9 per cent. Its quarterly total of 10,234 units is 60.61 per cent higher than the same period last year.
- Tata Aeris: it had no August sales in the table, so its 2,406 units are a debut-month effect, not a trend.
- Midsize sedans: the Virtus, Verna, Slavia and City together fell 23.6 per cent. The Verna and City grew, while the Virtus (-28.9 per cent) and Slavia (-47.1 per cent) declined sharply. The Slavia facelift went on sale in October, so its September figure reflects the outgoing model.
- Toyota Camry: up 75.2 per cent, but from only 137 units.
What the Quarter Shows
Across the third quarter of the calendar year, sedans sold 1,05,760 units, up 11.44 per cent on the year, per Rushlane. Sedans are growing, but almost entirely in the small, affordable end of the market, led by the Dzire, Aura and Amaze.
Why It Matters
The compact sedan group is where the volume sits, and buyers wanting a boot and a low price still have a few choices. The midsize group is the real worry, where a few hundred units a month separate the models. A fresh product like the Aeris shows what it takes to move the needle.
