Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) and Stellantis signed a Definitive Agreement on October 12, 2026, to share product technology and vehicle architecture. The deal follows a memorandum of understanding signed in February 2026. The first product is expected to be a midsize SUV based on the Tata Sierra, for both India and export markets, according to the companies' announcement as reported by Drivespark.
What Is Official
- Scope: TMPV will give Stellantis access to its advanced product technology and vehicle architecture, and Stellantis will build on it through its engineering work in India.
- Markets: the vehicles are meant for more than 50 global markets, adapted to local needs.
- Plant: production will happen at Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited (FIAPL), the 50:50 joint venture between Tata Motors and Stellantis. Its Ranjangaon plant near Pune builds the Jeep Compass and Meridian, CKD versions of the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, and the Tata Nexon, Altroz and Curvv.
- Statements: Shailesh Chandra, MD and CEO of TMPV, called the agreement an important next step into advanced vehicle technology. Tianshu Xin, COO of Stellantis Asia-Pacific, said it reinforces India's role as a strategic manufacturing and development hub.
The companies did not name the first vehicle or give a launch date. Earlier, at its May 21 Investor Day, Stellantis Asia-Pacific COO Gregoire Olivier said Tata would supply a platform for a new Jeep developed and assembled in India for global markets.
What Is Reported
Autocar India, citing sources, reports these details, which neither company has confirmed:
- Platform: the Sierra's ARGOS platform. Tata keeps ownership and licenses it to Stellantis.
- Codename: J1J inside Stellantis.
- Body and engines: a midsize SUV with both combustion and electric versions, using powertrains likely drawn from the Sierra, with a different upper body, styling and cabin.
- Drivetrain: a 4x4 version is likely, and left-hand-drive models are planned for export. Carlelo adds that both ICE and EV versions will get 4x4 systems.
- Range extender: a range-extender EV is being explored, with no decision made.
- Timeline: first product in the first half of 2028. A dedicated team in Pune is working on it, and the plant is expected to be adapted over about 18 months.
- Name: not fixed. Stellantis is said to be benchmarking the Jeep Renegade and Compass.
Autocar India notes that its emails to both companies went unanswered at the time of publication. Carlelo's article also quotes a Rs 15 to 20 lakh bracket, but that describes the segment, not a Jeep price.
Why It Matters
For Stellantis, the deal gives a cost-efficient way to a smaller, India-built Jeep. For Tata, licensing ARGOS spreads development costs and brings volume to a shared plant. The open points are the model name, price and the real launch date, none of which exists on record yet. Details of the platform's first car are on TATA.cars, and Jeep's range is on Jeep India. We will update this story as more is confirmed.
