Renault has opened bookings for the Duster Hybrid and put a number on its fuel economy. The company says the strong-hybrid SUV is ARAI-rated at 29 km/l, and you can reserve one with Rs 21,000 on Renault India's website or at a dealership. The launch is set for October 17, and the price will be announced then.
The Hybrid System
Renault calls the setup E-Tech 160. It pairs a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery:
- Motor one: about 20hp, working as a generator
- Motor two: about 49hp, driving the wheels
- Combined output: 160hp and 172Nm
- Gearbox: a multi-mode automatic
It is a self-charging strong hybrid, so you never plug it in. Renault says the car can cover up to 80% of city driving in electric mode, and links the system to its Formula 1 experience, which is a marketing claim you cannot verify from the spec sheet.
How the Mileage Claim Works
An ARAI figure is measured in standard lab conditions. Real-world economy will be lower and will vary with traffic, speed, temperature and driving style. Treat 29 km/l as a comparison number, not a promise at the pump.
Where It Sits in the Range
The new-generation Duster starts at Rs 10.49 lakh (ex-showroom). The hybrid is the third powertrain option, joining the 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines. Hybrid trims and features have not been detailed, and the price is unannounced.
The Rivals
It takes on the Maruti Grand Vitara, the Maruti Victoris and the Toyota Hyryder, all of which already offer hybrids. The hybrid segment in India has been dominated by those names, so Renault is entering a space where buyers already have proven options and wide service networks. Details are on Renault India's website.
A Caution on Availability
One report says Renault has confirmed that the hybrid is sold out for the current calendar year. We found that in a single source, so we are treating it as unverified. If it holds, the Rs 21,000 deposit may secure a delivery next year.
What To Do Next
Wait for the October 17 price before committing. A hybrid has to be priced close enough to the turbo-petrol versions to pay back its extra cost in fuel savings.
