Mercedes-Benz India Posts Its Best Quarter Ever

Mercedes-Benz India has closed its strongest quarter on record, even as growth cools compared with earlier in the year.

The company delivered 5,422 vehicles between July and September, about 6% more than a year ago and around 17% above the previous quarter. Across January to September, it sold 15,190 units, up between 7.5% and 8% depending on how the figure is rounded. That is the best nine-month period Mercedes has recorded in India, according to figures released on October 5.

Where the Growth Came From

Not every part of the range moved at the same speed. The company reported these gains over the same period last year:

  1. Mercedes-AMG: up 18%, with the AMG G 63 hitting record monthly sales
  2. Top-end vehicles: up 13%, led by the S-Class, the Mercedes-Maybach range, the GLS and the G 63
  3. Battery-electric models: up 16%, with the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV rising 68%

The long-wheelbase E-Class remains the best-selling luxury car in the line-up, and the C-Class, GLC and GLE form the core of the volume business. Mercedes also credits its MANUFAKTUR customisation programme for pushing buyers toward pricier, personalised cars in the top end.

The Festive Push

Mercedes ran a "Dream Days" campaign in the quarter, with three-month EMI holidays on SUVs, interest rates from 6.99% on select models and key-to-key exchange offers. Whether the discounts or the products did the heavy lifting is not clear from the company's own numbers.

What Comes Next

Two launches are on the calendar, according to reports on the results. A new electrified S-Class is expected in mid-October, and the GLC electric is slated for November 4. One report also says the new CLA electric has more than 1,000 confirmed orders. We could not verify that order count against a second source, so treat it as indicative.

Mercedes also recently opened a showroom concept in Gurugram that focuses on experience over a hard sell. For the sales picture, though, the story is simpler: the luxury market is still growing, but at a single-digit pace, and the brand is leaning on its priciest and most electric models to keep the numbers rising.
