JSW Motors has put a date on its first car, with a catch. Reports on October 9 say the Combat SUV will make its debut in the first days of December, which is later than the Diwali timing the company was originally aiming for. Nobody has yet confirmed whether December 3 or December 4 is the right day, and nobody has confirmed a price.
What Is Actually Happening in December
Autocar India reports that JSW will unveil the Combat on December 4, and its article gives no on-sale date. Team-BHP describes the same unveil. Rushlane calls December 4 the launch date. A separate trade summary of the Autocar report carried December 3 and noted the dates were unresolved.
The cautious reading is that December brings a debut, and sales follow later. JSW has not issued a statement on the date, the name or the price.
What the Combat Is Expected to Be
The Combat is widely expected to be a rebadged version of the Chery-built Jetour T2, since JSW has a partnership with Chery. Everything below is reported or expected, not confirmed by JSW:
- Powertrain: a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, two electric motors on the front axle, an 18.4kWh battery and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission
- Output: about 355 to 360bhp and 610Nm
- Range: around 90km on electric power alone (NEDC) and up to roughly 1,100km combined
- Body: a five-seat SUV about 4,785mm long with a 2,800mm wheelbase and 220mm of ground clearance
- Features likely carried over: a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch driver display, ventilated seats, a 540-degree camera and Level-2 ADAS
Where It Will Be Built
Reports disagree here. Autocar India says the SUV is expected to be assembled at JSW's plant in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. Rushlane says it is expected to arrive as a fully built import at first, with local assembly for later models. We cannot settle this until JSW speaks.
Price: Only Speculation
Autocar India says JSW is reportedly keen to price the Combat aggressively, possibly between Rs 40 lakh and Rs 50 lakh, which would put it against the Kia Sorento and Toyota Fortuner. That is an expectation, not a statement. For background on the group, see JSW.
Why It Matters
Plug-in hybrids are still rare in India, and a 1,100km claimed range at this size would be unusual. Whether JSW can price and support the car well is the real test, and the December event is unlikely to answer that.
