Verna Overtakes Fronx As India's Top Car Export

For months, Maruti Suzuki's Fronx and Jimny have traded the top spot in India's car export rankings almost every quarter. July 2026 broke that pattern entirely. Hyundai Verna leapt to the number one position, with 7,124 units exported — a 49.63% jump from 4,761 units in the same month last year.

That single month's growth is enough to make the Verna the standout story in an otherwise broadly positive export report. The sedan alone accounted for 10.68% of the combined volume from India's top 30 exported models.

Where the Usual Leaders Landed

Maruti Suzuki's Jimny, which has anchored the top of these rankings for much of the year, fell to second place with 5,784 units — a 15.12% decline from 6,814 units a year earlier. The Fronx, India's most exported car for the full FY2026 and Q2 2026 periods, slipped to third with 4,570 units, though it still posted healthy 9.17% year-on-year growth.

Rounding out the top five, Hyundai's Grand i10 NIOS held steady in fourth with 4,554 units, up a modest 1.63%, while the Hyundai Aura climbed to fifth with 4,447 units, a stronger 22.64% increase.

The Bigger Movers Further Down the List

Beyond the top five, several models posted genuinely striking growth numbers. Maruti's Dzire exports rose 34.81% to 3,919 units. Nissan's Magnite delivered one of the month's standout performances, jumping 68.83% year-on-year to 3,537 units, up from 2,095 a year prior — continuing a growth trend that's made the Magnite one of Nissan's few consistent bright spots in India.

Volkswagen's Virtus posted 59.76% growth to 2,890 units, and Maruti's Ertiga rose 56.91% to 2,873 units. Not every model shared in the momentum, though — Maruti's Swift fell 12.99% to 3,001 units, and the Baleno dropped sharply, down 45.58% to 2,708 units.

The Overall Export Picture

India's total car exports reached 69,931 units in July 2026, up 2.40% from 68,292 units in the same month last year — modest growth at the aggregate level, even as individual models like the Verna and Magnite posted dramatically stronger numbers. The top 30 exported models accounted for 66,728 units combined, representing more than 95% of total export volume for the month.

Combined with domestic sales, total passenger vehicle volumes hit 4,65,130 units in July, up a strong 25.87% year-on-year from 3,69,543 units. Domestic sales did most of the heavy lifting here, rising 31.19% to 3,95,199 units and accounting for nearly 85% of the combined total — a reminder that even with export gains grabbing headlines, India's home market remains the primary volume driver for most manufacturers.

Why the Verna's Jump Matters

Here's the context that makes Hyundai's July performance genuinely notable. The Verna has historically been a stronger performer abroad than at home — in FY2026, it exported 63,044 units for the full year, an average that works out to roughly 5,250 units a month. July's 7,124 units sit well above that annual pace, suggesting either a particularly strong month for specific export markets or a broader uptick in overseas demand for the sedan.

Sedans have generally struggled for attention in India's SUV-dominated domestic market, making export performance an increasingly important indicator of a model's continued relevance for manufacturers weighing production allocation and future investment decisions.

For Hyundai, unseating Maruti's export leaders — even for a single month — signals the Verna still has genuine pulling power in international markets, even as it continues to play second fiddle to SUVs on Indian roads.
