Mercedes-Benz has launched the AMG G 63 Offroad PRO in India, and unlike a typical special-edition trim built primarily around visual differentiation, this one comes with genuine hardware changes aimed at buyers who actually intend to take their G-Class off tarmac. Priced at Rs 3.80 crore, ex-showroom, it carries a Rs 6 lakh premium over the standard AMG G 63 — a comparatively modest step up given the scope of what's actually added.
Why This Is A Genuine Off-Road Specialist, Not Just A Trim Package
Here's what separates the Offroad PRO from a cosmetic-only special edition. Mercedes-Benz has fitted AMG Active Ride Control suspension with active roll stabilisation — a genuinely different setup from the standard car's suspension, not just a firmer tune. Active Balance Control lets roll stiffness be adjusted across three distinct stages depending on the specific off-road conditions a driver is navigating, giving genuinely granular control rather than a single fixed off-road mode.
The standout technical addition is AMG Traction PRO, available specifically in the Rock and Sand drive modes. Mercedes claims this system can control braking torque at each individual wheel, offering seven distinct stages of locking — engineering aimed specifically at helping the SUV "dig itself out" of genuinely loose, difficult surfaces like sand or scree, rather than just providing marginally better grip on a well-maintained trail.
Hardware Built For Actual Expedition Use
Cosmetically, the Offroad PRO gets 20-inch AMG five-twin-spoke wheels finished in matte black with a diamond-turned rim edge, wrapped in 275/50 R20 rubber, along with AMG-specific bumpers and flared wheel arches. But the more telling additions are functional: a Professional roof luggage rack built with aluminium panels, and a removable rear ladder — equipment genuinely aimed at buyers who'll load real expedition gear, not just buyers who want the visual suggestion of ruggedness.
The Engine Stays Exactly The Same
Worth being clear about what hasn't changed. The Offroad PRO carries over the standard AMG G 63's 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, producing 585hp and 850Nm, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, specifically modified with the new off-road PRO controls layered on top. This is a genuine engineering variant built around off-road capability, not a performance upgrade dressed up in rugged styling.
A Dedicated Off-Road Information Display
Inside, Mercedes has repositioned the off-road cockpit controls on the dashboard for easier access during actual off-road driving. The 12.3-inch digital driver's display and 12.3-inch touchscreen, running the latest MBUX NTG7 multimedia system, can show vehicle position, compass heading, altitude, steering angle, tyre pressure and temperature, and the status of the differential locks — genuinely useful real-time information for a driver navigating unfamiliar, difficult terrain rather than just a stylised digital gauge cluster.
A "transparent bonnet" function gives drivers a camera feed from underneath the vehicle, letting them see terrain and obstacles that would otherwise be hidden by the engine bay — a feature that's become increasingly common on serious off-road-focused vehicles precisely because it addresses a genuine visibility limitation.
Everyday Luxury Hasn't Been Sacrificed
Despite the off-road focus, the cabin retains genuine luxury credentials: an 18-speaker, 760W Burmester 3D surround-sound system, ambient lighting, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, USB-C ports, and an augmented reality navigation system. Safety equipment includes active brake assist, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera — a comprehensive package that doesn't compromise on-road comfort in exchange for off-road capability.
Why Mercedes Is Keeping This Deliberately Scarce
Mercedes-Benz India has confirmed the Offroad PRO will be sold in limited numbers only. Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, framed the launch around the G-Class's specific legacy: "The G-Class is one of the most enduring and desirable automotive icons for any automotive enthusiast across the world. Its continued success of more than four decades has been anchored in its unmatched off-roading capability, desirability and iconic characteristic." He added that the variant's limited availability specifically underlines Mercedes-Benz India's focus on its top-end portfolio and exclusivity for existing G 63 customers.
That framing lines up directly with comments Iyer made in coverage we've reported separately, where he explicitly stated Mercedes has "opted out" of chasing volume in India's competitive entry-luxury segment, preferring "value over volume." The Offroad PRO's deliberate scarcity is a concrete example of exactly that strategy in practice — a genuinely low-volume, high-margin product rather than a mass-market push.

Given the confirmed limited availability, prospective buyers will need to check directly with dealers on allocation and expected waiting periods before committing, rather than assuming standard order timelines apply.
