Renault has launched the Duster Hybrid in India at Rs 16.99 lakh (ex-showroom, introductory) on October 17. The strong-hybrid SUV is ARAI-rated at 29 kmpl, comes in three trims, and is the first Duster with a self-charging hybrid system. Bookings opened on October 9 with a Rs 21,000 deposit, and the price we reported as pending is now official.
Price List

One report says the introductory pricing applies only to cars delivered by December 31, 2026. The reports we reviewed do not say what the prices will be after that date.
How the Hybrid System Works
The setup is called E-Tech 160. It pairs a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine running on the Atkinson cycle with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery. Combined output is quoted as 160PS (one report converts this to 157.8hp), and the electric motor alone is rated at 208Nm. Another report gives a combined torque figure of 172Nm, so we are not treating one number as final.
You never plug it in. The battery charges from the engine and from braking. Renault says up to 80 per cent of city driving can be done in electric mode under suitable conditions, and it also claims savings of up to 30 per cent on fuel compared with diesel vehicles.
The gearbox is not an e-CVT like the ones in rival hybrids. It is a multi-mode automatic with fixed ratios, reported as two electric and four petrol gears with dog clutches, which allows 15 drive combinations. Renault claims 0 to 100kmph in about 9.6 seconds.
Mileage
The ARAI-certified figure is 29 kmpl, with a claimed range of up to 1,400km on a tank. One report compares this with the rival strong hybrids: 27.97 kmpl for the Grand Vitara and Hyryder and 28.65 kmpl for the Victoris hybrid. Those are lab numbers. In daily use, traffic, speed and the air-conditioning load will reduce them, and the gap between rivals on paper may not show up on the road.
Features and Safety
The Duster Hybrid keeps the new-generation Duster's rugged styling, adding an illuminated grille and frequency-dependent dampers. Two interior themes are offered, one of them Dune Brown. The range-wide equipment list includes:
- a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Google built in and a 10.25-inch digital driver display;
- an electric panoramic sunroof and ventilated front seats;
- dual-zone climate control and wireless charging;
- six airbags, stability control, tyre pressure monitoring, a 360-degree camera and parking sensors;
- ADAS with adaptive cruise control and stop-and-go, emergency braking, lane-keep assist and traffic-sign recognition.
Equipment varies by trim. One report notes that the wider Duster range has a five-star Bharat NCAP rating, but that rating has not been confirmed specifically for the hybrid. Ground clearance is listed at 212mm, and boot space for the Duster range is 518 litres to the parcel shelf.
Warranty and Ownership Package
The hybrid battery carries an eight-year or 1.6 lakh km warranty. The vehicle is covered for up to seven years under the Renault Forever programme, subject to its terms. A new Renault Protect 360 package starts at Rs 89,900 and includes three years of insurance, three years of scheduled maintenance and an assured resale value. Read the buyback terms before relying on them.
Deliveries
One report says first deliveries begin on November 6, with priority for existing R-Pass owners. Another says deliveries start in November, and a third expects them around Diwali. Confirm your allocation with the dealer.
How It Compares
The Duster Hybrid takes on the strong-hybrid versions of the Maruti Grand Vitara, the Maruti Victoris and the Toyota Hyryder. Those cars have far bigger sales: the Duster sold 465 units in September, 402 in August and 512 in July, according to the data we have seen. A hybrid may give the Duster a new reason to be considered, but Renault's network and resale will matter as much as the mileage.
