Mahindra's Electric SUVs Cross 1 Lakh Billings

Mahindra & Mahindra has reported total auto sales of 1,14,874 vehicles for September 2026, including exports, up 15% year-on-year. Buried inside that headline number is a genuine milestone: the company's Electric Origin SUV portfolio has now crossed 1 lakh cumulative billings since launch.

Where The Growth Actually Came From

Mahindra's domestic SUV sales reached 64,092 units in September, up 14% from 56,233 units a year earlier. That alone accounts for more than half the company's total monthly volume, confirming SUVs remain Mahindra's core growth engine. Commercial vehicles grew at a similar pace, with domestic sales reaching 30,420 units, up 14%.

The standout percentage gain came from three-wheelers, including electric variants, which jumped 26% year-on-year. Within the commercial segment specifically, small commercial vehicles under two tonnes grew 19%, slightly heavier LCVs grew 13%, and Mahindra's Trucks & Buses Division posted 53% growth to 2,912 units — genuinely the fastest-growing part of the company's entire portfolio this month.

Why The 1 Lakh EV Milestone Matters

Dr Velusamy R, President of Automotive Business at Mahindra & Mahindra, specifically called out the Electric Origin SUV achievement: "Adding to this momentum, we are proud to have crossed the milestone of 1 lakh billing of our Electric Origin SUVs since launch." That portfolio — spanning the BE 6, XEV 9e, and XEV 9S — has built up to this figure since the BE 6 and XEV 9e first launched, with the XEV 9S joining more recently.

Reaching six figures on a genuinely new electric SUV line, rather than an electrified version of an existing petrol or diesel model, is a meaningful data point for how quickly Mahindra's dedicated EV platform has found buyers. It's also a useful real-world counterpoint to how Battery-as-a-Service financing, which we've covered extensively across Mahindra's own pricing moves this year, appears to be translating into actual delivered units rather than just lowering the barrier to booking.

One Soft Spot: Exports

Not every number moved in the same direction. Mahindra's exports declined 7% year-on-year to 4,019 units in September, against 4,320 units a year earlier — a modest dip, but one that stands out against otherwise broad-based domestic growth across nearly every other segment.

The Year-To-Date Picture

Zooming out to the full fiscal year so far, utility vehicle sales from April through September reached 3,58,142 units, up 20% year-on-year from 2,97,570 units in the same period last year — a stronger growth rate than September's standalone 14% figure, suggesting the company's SUV momentum has been building steadily across the year rather than spiking in any single month.

Why This Report Matters Beyond One Month's Numbers

September's results land as part of the broader industry-wide sales reporting cycle we've tracked across multiple manufacturers this year, with companies posting their monthly numbers right as festive-season demand begins building. For Mahindra specifically, a 15% overall growth rate combined with a genuine EV milestone gives the company a strong data point heading into what's traditionally India's highest-volume vehicle-buying period — a position that puts real pressure on rivals to match that momentum through their own festive-season product pushes.
