Hyundai Group Plans $15.5 Billion India Investment

Hyundai Motor Group plans to invest $15.5 billion in India between 2026 and 2032, roughly Rs 1.47 lakh crore. Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung outlined the plan to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on October 13, and the group announced it publicly on October 14. The money covers Hyundai Motor India, Kia India and the wider automotive ecosystem, including future mobility technology.

The announcement arrived a day after Hyundai opened its Pune plant with a separate Rs 11,000 crore commitment. We covered that opening separately; this article looks at the bigger group plan.

What the Group Has Announced

The confirmed parts of the plan are:

  1. R&D: about $700 million, or roughly Rs 6,641 crore, for the Indian R&D centre, including a vehicle testing track, along with recruiting local engineers.
  2. Manufacturing: more capacity at Hyundai Motor India and Kia India, to serve the home market and strengthen India as an export base.
  3. A dedicated investment entity in India to coordinate funding, build partnerships and identify local suppliers.
  4. Supplier localisation: investment in regional suppliers to raise local content and make the supply chain more resilient.
  5. Future mobility: the group plans to explore vehicle financing, EV charging infrastructure, end-of-life vehicle recycling and support for startups.
  6. Jobs: the group already employs more than 24,000 people in India and expects the plan to create jobs in manufacturing, engineering, research and supplier networks.

Chung called India "one of Hyundai Motor Group's most important and strategic markets globally." The announcement does not say how the $15.5 billion is divided between Hyundai and Kia.

Current Capacity

The group's installed capacity exceeds 14 lakh vehicles a year:

Plant Annual capacity
Hyundai, Chennai8.24 lakh
Hyundai, Pune1.70 lakh
Kia, Anantapur4.31 lakh

Pune's capacity will rise in phases. No combined final target has been set.

What Is Only Reported

One report goes further than the official announcement and lists product targets. We have not seen these confirmed by Hyundai or Kia, so treat them as reported plans:

  1. Hyundai: 26 new models and updates by 2030, including a locally built small electric SUV expected in a few months, with Level-2 ADAS. The Bayon, due on October 26, is part of this lineup. The Genesis luxury brand would enter India in 2027. Targets of 90 per cent local content and exports of about 30 per cent of Indian production by 2030 are also mentioned.
  2. Kia: annual sales of about 4.1 lakh units and a 7.6 per cent market share by 2030, with eight electrified models, including a Seltos Hybrid in 2027, Sonet and Carens hybrids by 2029 and a locally built small electric SUV by 2029. A dealer network of 800 outlets by 2030 is also listed.

The Market Context

The group's combined market share in India is about 19 per cent, second to Maruti Suzuki, according to figures cited by a Korean newspaper. Cumulative Hyundai sales reached 9,884,960 units by the end of the third quarter and should pass one crore before the year ends. The same report puts India's passenger vehicle market at 4.57 million units in 2025 and 5.25 million in 2026, and notes that import tariffs can reach 110 per cent, which makes local production a price advantage.

Chung also pitched India as an export base for the Global South, especially the Middle East and Africa. Hyundai and TVS Motor have built an electric three-wheeler prototype aimed at a commercial launch by late 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this include Kia? Yes. The plan covers Hyundai Motor India, Kia India and the wider ecosystem, though the split is not published.

Why It Matters

A seven-year, $15.5 billion commitment signals that Hyundai plans to keep growing its India business for the long term. The real test is delivery: the announcement gives no timetable, no split by brand and no list of models, so the numbers that matter will come with each plant expansion and launch. Updated details will appear on Hyundai India's website and Kia India's website.
