E2W Sales Dip 16% In August, TVS Still On Top

India's electric two-wheeler market shrank for the second month running in August. Total registrations came in at 1.72 lakh units, down 16.2% from July's 2.05 lakh — dropping below the 2 lakh mark for the first time in months.

Still, year-on-year the picture stays strong. August's numbers sit roughly 64% higher than the same month last year, according to Vahan data. The slowdown is sequential, not structural — at least for now.

Who won, who lost

TVS Motor kept the top spot despite a rough month of its own. Registrations fell about 17% to 46,587 units, down from 55,823 in July. The silver lining: TVS's iQube crossed 1 million cumulative customers during August, a milestone we covered separately.

Bajaj held second place. Ather stayed comfortably ahead of Ola in third, with 27,218 units — down roughly 11% from July's 30,632.

The Ola paradox

Here's the number worth sitting with. Ola Electric's registrations fell 7.7% to 13,132 units in August. Yet its market share actually improved, climbing from 6.8% in July to 7.6% in August.

That's not a contradiction — it means Ola's rivals fell harder than Ola did. When the whole pie shrinks and your slice shrinks slower than everyone else's, your percentage share goes up even as your raw sales go down. Ola's push into affordability — including the newly launched S1Z starting at Rs 79,999 — appears to be cushioning the fall relative to competitors.

Why the market cooled

Analysts point to two overlapping causes: lower government subsidy support and a broader industry pivot toward affordable, mass-market EVs rather than premium early-adopter models. TVS, Bajaj, Ola and Ather have all pushed sub-Rs 1 lakh or value-focused variants in recent months, chasing the far larger commuter segment rather than early adopters willing to pay a premium.

That shift changes the competitive math. Commuter buyers are more price-sensitive and less loyal to any single brand, which means monthly rankings could keep moving as manufacturers adjust pricing and incentives.

The bigger picture

Zoom out to the full year, and the segment still looks healthy. TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Hero Vida have crossed 1 million combined e2W sales in 2026 so far, with the broader market at 1.36 million units through eight months — putting the industry on pace for its first-ever 2-million-unit year.

One month of decline doesn't undo that trajectory. But with subsidies fading and price competition intensifying, expect market share churn to keep making headlines through the rest of 2026.
