The Maruti Baleno was India's best-selling car in September 2026. The hatchback sold 25,392 units, up 93 per cent from 13,173 a year ago, and it finished 4,936 units ahead of the Tata Nexon in second place.
These are wholesale figures, meaning dispatches from factories to dealers, not retail registrations.
The September 2026 Top 10

What the Numbers Say
The ten models together sold 1,91,332 units, against 1,65,725 in September 2025, which is growth of about 15.5 per cent. Six of the ten grew year on year. Four fell: the Nexon, Dzire, Creta and Scorpio, which together lost 6,664 units.
The Nexon and Punch finished just 123 units apart, so Tata held the second and third spots on a very thin margin. Between them they sold 40,789 units.
Maruti's Grip
Maruti Suzuki took six of the ten places: Baleno, Fronx, Wagon R, Dzire, Swift and Ertiga. Those six models account for 1,15,573 units, or about 60.4 per cent of the top 10 volume. Two Tata models, one Hyundai and one Mahindra make up the rest.
By body style, three hatchbacks (Baleno, Wagon R and Swift) sold 61,626 units between them. The Dzire is the only sedan on the list and the Ertiga the only MPV.
Read the Baleno Number With Care
A 93 per cent jump looks dramatic, but it comes off a weak base. The Baleno sold only 13,173 units in September 2025, so the gain of 12,219 units partly reflects that low starting point. It was still the largest absolute increase in the top 10. Details on the car are on Nexa's website.
Why It Matters
Compact SUVs have led the charts for much of the year, so a premium hatchback at the top is a notable change. The shift also shows that sedan demand is soft: the Dzire lost 2,284 units. For the Tata side, the Nexon's 9 per cent fall is worth watching against a rising Punch. You can see the current range at TATA.cars.
One month does not make a trend. Festive-season retail numbers for October will show whether these wholesale gains reach buyers.
