India's electric motorcycle market has a new monthly leader. Oben Electric registered 1,417 units in September, its best month so far, and finished ahead of Revolt and Ultraviolette in VAHAN data compiled by trackers on October 5.
Oben holds a 46.2% share among the five motorcycle makers tracked. That is a big slice of a small pie: the five brands together registered just 3,066 bikes.
How the Segment Stacked Up
- Oben Electric: 1,417 units, 46.2%
- Revolt Intellicorp: 1,027 units, 33.5%
- Ultraviolette Automotive: 536 units, 17.5%
- Matter Motor Works: 69 units
- Raptee Energy: 17 units
Oben sold roughly 38% more bikes than Revolt, a gap of 390 units. The company credits the result to the Rorr Evo, a commuter motorcycle priced at Rs 1,24,999 with a claimed range of 180km.
Reading the Number Carefully
One month does not make a trend. Revolt has led the segment for most of the year, and the data providers that reported this result were careful to say so. Whether Oben keeps the top spot depends on October, when festive demand tends to reshape rankings.
Context matters too. Put electric scooters back into the picture and Oben ranks only 11th among India's electric two-wheeler makers. The market leaders, TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto, each registered close to 50,000 units in September. That makes Oben's total about 0.7% of the registrations among the top 25 makers.
Behind the Record
The company has built its 10,000th electric motorcycle at its Bengaluru plant, which has an annual capacity of around 100,000 units. September's registrations used only about 17% of the plant's average monthly capacity of roughly 8,300 units. Oben says it runs more than 150 showrooms and service centres across over 90 cities in 18 states. Details are on the Oben Electric website.
Why It Matters
Electric motorcycles have lagged scooters for years because buyers worry about range, price and resale value. A commuter-focused bike at around Rs 1.25 lakh with a 180km claim goes straight at those worries. If more makers follow with cheaper, practical bikes, the segment could finally start to scale.
For now, the honest picture is simple. The motorcycle segment has a new monthly champion, and it still has a long way to go.
