Kia has pulled the wraps off the India-spec Sorento, and unlike most reveals that stop at renders and spec sheets, this one comes with an actual production line already running.
Kia India confirmed that manufacturing of the Sorento has begun at its Anantapur facility in Andhra Pradesh, with the first India-built unit rolling off the line the same day as the reveal. Full pricing and final specifications will be announced at the official launch on September 4, 2026.
A Genuine First for Kia in India
This isn't just another SUV addition to Kia's lineup. The Sorento will be the brand's first hybrid-powered SUV in India, its first three-row ICE SUV, and the first Sorento globally to launch with Kia's new AI Assistant, built on Live Generative AI technology for more natural, conversational voice interactions instead of fixed commands.
That's three firsts bundled into a single model — a clear signal Kia is treating this launch as a genuine strategic move into premium territory, not a routine lineup refresh.
Two Powertrains, One Standout Feature
Kia has confirmed two engine options for the India-spec Sorento: a 1.6-litre strong-hybrid unit producing 238hp and 380Nm, and a 2.0-litre diesel engine putting out 202hp and 441Nm — the same diesel unit already used in the Kia Carnival.
The standout detail is the hybrid variant's all-wheel-drive configuration. A hybrid powertrain paired with AWD is currently unique in this segment in India, giving Kia a genuine differentiator against rivals that typically offer either hybrid efficiency or all-wheel capability, but rarely both together.
Design and Dimensions
The India-spec Sorento carries over the 2023 global model's design language rather than Kia's newer, more polarising "Opposites United" styling seen on the Seltos. That's a deliberate choice — the brand is betting on broader, more universal appeal for a flagship model rather than a design language that's split opinion elsewhere in its range.
Up front, expect Kia's signature Tiger Nose grille, vertical LED headlamps with Y-shaped daytime running lights, and dual-tone alloy wheels likely sized at 19 inches. The SUV measures approximately 4,815mm in length, 1,900mm in width and 1,700mm in height, riding on a 2,815mm wheelbase.
Inside, buyers get connected twin displays for infotainment and instrumentation, each around 12.3 inches, along with a dual-purpose control panel that toggles between climate and media functions.
Why Local Manufacturing Changes the Math
Here's the part that matters most for pricing. Building the Sorento locally at Anantapur, rather than importing it as a fully built unit, gives Kia meaningfully more room to price competitively. Industry expectations currently put the Sorento in the Rs 30-35 lakh bracket, ex-showroom — an aggressive number for a vehicle competing in a segment where imported rivals often carry a steep duty premium.
Where It Fits in the Market
Once launched, the Sorento will go up against the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tayron, Honda ZR-V, and the MG Gloster and Majestor — a genuinely competitive premium SUV field where hybrid AWD, three-row practicality, and local pricing could give Kia a real edge if the September 4 numbers land where expectations suggest.
Kia India CEO Gwanggu Lee called the Sorento's arrival "a defining moment" for the brand's premium portfolio — a description that, given the list of firsts attached to this launch, doesn't look like an overstatement.
