Kia officially launched the Sorento in India today, and the introductory pricing came in more aggressive than most pre-launch estimates suggested. Prices start at Rs 27.99 lakh, ex-showroom, and run up to Rs 40.39 lakh for the top-spec configuration.
Kia is positioning the Sorento as its new flagship ICE-powered model — the brand's first three-row combustion SUV and first strong-hybrid offering in the Indian market.
Two Powertrains, Genuine AWD Choice
The diesel range runs from Rs 27.99 lakh to Rs 38.89 lakh, powered by a 2.2-litre engine producing 193PS and 442Nm. The 1.6-litre strong-hybrid variant starts at Rs 29.49 lakh and tops out at Rs 40.39 lakh, combining a 180PS petrol engine with a 65PS electric motor for a total output rated at 265Nm of torque.
Here's the genuinely differentiating detail: the hybrid variant is available with all-wheel drive, standard on the top-spec HTX trim. A hybrid-AWD combination remains rare in this segment in India, giving Kia a real point of separation from rivals that typically offer either efficiency or all-wheel capability, not both together.
Seating Flexibility Built Into the Trim Structure
The Sorento comes across three trims — HTE, HTK, and HTX. The base HTE is seven-seat only, while HTK and HTX both offer buyers a choice between six and seven-seat configurations, depending on preference. That flexibility matters for families who don't always need maximum headcount but want the option available within the same trim rather than having to jump to a different variant tier entirely.
Dimensions and Design
The Sorento measures 4,815mm in length, 1,900mm in width, and 1,785mm in height, riding on a 2,815mm wheelbase — genuinely large numbers that place it firmly in serious three-row territory. Kia has carried over the global 2023-generation design rather than its newer, more divisive "Opposites United" language seen on the Seltos, opting for broader appeal with the brand's familiar Tiger Nose grille, vertical LED headlamps with Y-shaped daytime running lights, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
Exterior details extend to bridge-type roof rails, a roof spoiler with a hidden rear wiper, and vertically oriented LED tail lamps — styling cues aimed at giving the Sorento a premium, cohesive presence rather than a bulky, oversized look.
What Comes Standard, Even at the Base
Even the entry-level HTE doesn't feel stripped down. It comes with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 4-inch digital instrument display, a 10-way powered driver's seat, six speakers, 18-inch alloy wheels, eight parking sensors, and a rear camera. Kia is also offering separate Convenience, ADAS, and Black Line styling packs across the range, letting buyers layer on additional equipment without necessarily jumping to the top trim.
Higher variants add a powered tailgate, a 360-degree camera system, and full ADAS functionality — features that push the Sorento's equipment list well past what buyers typically expect at this price bracket.
Where the Sorento Fits Competitively
At its introductory pricing, the Sorento positions itself against the Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line, and Honda ZR-V — all established players in the premium mid-size SUV space. Kia's combination of aggressive pricing, genuine hybrid-AWD availability, and a broad standard equipment list gives it a real shot at disrupting a segment that hasn't seen this level of direct competition in a while.
Built in India, Not Imported
Production of the Sorento has already begun at Kia's Anantapur facility in Andhra Pradesh, with the first India-built unit rolling off the line ahead of today's launch. Local manufacturing, rather than importing the SUV as a fully built unit, is a big part of why Kia has been able to land pricing this competitive — avoiding the steep import duties that typically push fully imported SUVs in this segment well above Rs 45-50 lakh.
Bookings had already opened at Rs 25,000 ahead of today's official reveal, with deliveries expected to follow in the coming weeks.
For Kia, the Sorento isn't just another SUV addition — it's the brand's clearest attempt yet at owning the top end of India's mainstream SUV market, backed by local manufacturing that makes genuinely competitive pricing possible on a vehicle this large and well-equipped.
