Hyundai has confirmed a new compact electric SUV built specifically for India, with a debut targeted by March 2027. The announcement came directly from the top: Jose Munoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, told investors at the company's 2026 CEO Investor Day, "A brand-new compact SUV is coming, designed and localised in India."
That's a meaningful phrase to pay attention to. This isn't an international model getting a India-spec badge — Hyundai is describing a vehicle engineered specifically with Indian buyers and Indian roads in mind.
The Platform Behind It
Internally codenamed HE1i, the EV was first teased at Hyundai's 2025 Investor Day, and today's announcement fills in more of the picture. It's a born-electric vehicle built on the E-GMP (K) platform — the same underlying architecture that powers the Inster EV sold in international markets. Production will happen at Hyundai's Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu.
Battery sourcing is notable too: Hyundai plans to use locally produced Exide battery packs, a decision that should help keep costs down through domestic sourcing rather than imported cells.
Two Range Options, Details Still Under Wraps
Hyundai has confirmed the HE1i will come in standard-range and long-range versions, though exact battery capacities and range figures for the India-spec model haven't been revealed yet. For a rough reference point, the Euro-spec Inster — built on the same platform — offers a 42kWh battery with 300km WLTP-claimed range, and a larger 49kWh pack rated at 355km. India-spec numbers could land in a similar territory, though real-world figures typically differ from WLTP ratings.
What's Confirmed on Features
Two specific technology pieces have already been confirmed: a "next-generation infotainment system" and Level 2 assisted driving technology. The infotainment detail is particularly interesting — it could be the same Pleos Connect system Hyundai is expected to introduce on the upcoming third-generation Creta, which would mark early evidence of Hyundai's newer software platform trickling down into a more affordable model rather than staying exclusive to flagship vehicles.
Where It Fits in the Market
This compact EV is positioned to compete directly with the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, and Kia Syros EV — all established players in India's growing sub-4m electric SUV space. Being manufactured domestically should give Hyundai genuine room to price competitively in a segment where import duties can otherwise push costs well above what buyers in this bracket are willing to pay.
Why This Fills a Real Gap for Hyundai
Here's the strategic context that makes this launch matter. Hyundai currently sells just two EVs in India — the Creta Electric and the Ioniq 5 — neither of which plays in the accessible, high-volume end of the market where Tata and Mahindra have built commanding leads. The HE1i gives Hyundai its first real shot at that segment.
The stakes are significant. Hyundai has set a target of electrified vehicles making up 50% of its India sales by 2030 — a goal that's difficult to hit without a genuinely affordable, mass-market EV in the lineup. Right now, that gap sits wide open.
The Bigger Picture
This announcement arrived alongside other confirmations from the same Investor Day, including news of a next-generation Creta and a new-generation i10 both planned for India. Taken together, it paints a picture of a company moving on multiple fronts at once — refreshing its bestselling nameplate while simultaneously building out its electric lineup from the ground up, rather than treating EVs as a side project running parallel to its core combustion business.
With March 2027 still several months away and full specifications yet to be revealed, there's a long runway before the HE1i reaches showrooms. But for a brand that's been playing catch-up in India's affordable EV race, today's confirmation marks the clearest signal yet that Hyundai intends to compete seriously in the segment that actually moves volume.
