Williams Racing has confirmed that Alex Albon will stay with the team through the 2027 Formula 1 season, putting an end to any speculation about his future just as the sport returns from its summer break.
The extension was announced as a one-year deal, keeping the 30-year-old at Grove for what will be his sixth season with the team and eighth in Formula 1 overall.
A Tough Year, A Renewed Bet
Here is what makes the timing interesting. Williams has not had an easy 2026. The team slipped to ninth in the constructors' standings this season, a sharp drop after finishing fifth just a year earlier. Albon himself has scored points in only two races, and the team went five straight weekends without a single point.
Despite that, Williams chose to lock him in rather than let the uncertainty drag on.
Team principal James Vowles did not hide his relief. He called Albon "one of the best drivers on the grid" and said the extension reflects the belief both sides share in the direction the team is heading. Vowles pointed to Albon's role as a driving force behind the team's ongoing rebuild — one that has meant new investment in people, tools and technology at the factory.
Why Albon Matters to This Team
Albon joined Williams back in 2022, arriving after a difficult year on the sidelines following his exit from Red Bull. Since then, he has quietly become the most tenured driver in the team's modern history.
Earlier this season, he broke Nigel Mansell's long-standing record for race starts with Williams. Then, at the Hungarian Grand Prix, he became the first driver to hit the 100-race mark for the team. Those are not small milestones for a squad that has spent years trying to climb back up the grid.
His best season came in 2025, when he finished eighth in the drivers' championship with 73 points — his strongest result yet, and one that helped push Williams to its best campaign since 2016.
What This Leaves Unanswered
One name is notably missing from this announcement: Carlos Sainz.
Albon's teammate has not yet committed his own future to Williams for 2027, and reports suggest a decision on his side could come in the next few weeks. Until that piece falls into place, Williams' full 2027 driver lineup remains only half-confirmed.
For now, though, the team has secured its anchor. Albon, in his own statement, said the transformation Williams has made since 2022 is "difficult to put into words," adding that one difficult season "doesn't tell the full picture" and only adds to his motivation to keep building with the team.
The 2027 season will also mark Williams' 50th anniversary in Formula 1 — giving this extension a symbolic weight that goes beyond just keeping a seat filled.
