HORSE & Hybdor Launch World’s First Flex-Fuel Marine PHEV: A Game-Changer in Sustainable Boating

Introduction:

In a groundbreaking collaboration, HORSE, a division of Horse Powertrain, has partnered with Brazilian startup Hybdor Tech to introduce the world’s first flex-fuel marine plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). This innovative venture marks HORSE’s inaugural entry into the maritime sector, aiming to revolutionize marine propulsion with sustainable and efficient technology.

The Partnership:

Hybdor Tech, part of the Espadarte Group, has developed the Duotech 200E system—a pioneering plug-in hybrid powertrain designed for Class 2 vessels (26–40 feet). HORSE contributes its 1.3-liter, 4-cylinder Turbo Flex Fuel ‘HR13’ engine to this system, bringing automotive-grade hybrid technology to the marine industry.

Key Features:

  • Dual Power Modes: The Duotech 200E operates in pure-combustion, pure-electric, and a combined “boost” mode, offering versatility and enhanced performance.
  • Efficient Charging: The system’s battery can be charged via a power outlet in just 90 minutes or through the combustion engine while in motion.
  • Flex-Fuel Capability: The HR13 engine is optimized for Brazil’s gasoline and ethanol flex fuels, supporting pure-ethanol combustion—a world-first for commercial marine engines.
  • Performance Metrics: The HR13 delivers 163PS (120kW) and 250Nm of torque at 1,600rpm, supplemented by electric motors providing 25PS (18kW) and 60Nm of torque.

Environmental Impact:

This collaboration addresses the pressing need for sustainable marine solutions. By utilizing ethanol—a renewable resource—the Duotech 200E significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, the hybrid system minimizes vibration and noise, enhancing the boating experience.

Statements from Leadership:

  • Matias Giannini, CEO of Horse Powertrain: “We’re excited to announce our first engine for marine vessels. This innovative solution with Hybdor showcases our global technology leadership and commitment to hybrid and alternative fuels.”
  • Patrice Haettel, CEO of HORSE Division: “Our agreement with Hybdor aligns with our energy transition goals, marking our first step into the marine market with a focus on sustainable mobility.”
  • Thiago Sielski Marquardt, CTO of Hybdor Tech: “HORSE was the ideal partner for our unique Duotech 200E. Their expertise in low-emission engines and understanding of Brazil’s flex-fuel market were crucial to our success.”

Conclusion:

The HORSE and Hybdor partnership signifies a monumental shift in marine propulsion technology. By integrating flex-fuel capabilities into a plug-in hybrid system, they set a new standard for sustainable and efficient marine travel. This collaboration not only benefits the environment but also enhances the overall boating experience.
